Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment

Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, Office of UG Admissions, the Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment leads the outreach, recruitment, and yield strategy and manages its implementation to ensure that SJSU meets new undergraduate strategic enrollment goals and priorities which directly contributes to the fiscal stability of SJSU. The Director provides leadership and management of the Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) unit. This position develops outreach, recruitment, and yield strategy and plans for California and out-of-state first time freshmen and California, out-of-state, and international upper division transfers. The Director plans and leads small and large scale recruitment and yield events on and off campus as well as coordinates participation in local, regional, and national fairs and events. The Director also leads SJSU’s Welcome Center which provides campus tours, informational sessions, and individual pre-admission counseling appointments for prospective students and their families. The SOAR Director and recruiting team educate prospective students, family members, and counselors about SJSU and the entire California State University. The Director establishes positive working relationships with community college and high school counselors and district leaders as well as community partners including local foundations and cultural affinity groups. The Director documents, reports, and analyzes recruitment, application, admits, and yield results of California, out of state and international upper division transfers each application cycle. The Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team, Enrollment Management Directors team and Enrollment Management Leadership Team. This position works collaboratively with departments within Enrollment Management and Student Affairs as well as the College of Professional & Global Education, Academic Affairs departments, Intercollegiate Athletics, University Marketing & Communications and University Advancement to promote San José State University to the community, prospective students and their families. The Director applies and interprets policies established by appropriate federal, state, system, and campus administration.  

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Student Affairs and Enrollment Management leadership as well as Academic Affairs departments to determine appropriate outreach, recruitment and yield strategy to meet enrollment goals and priorities of new undergraduates including class level, residency, and academic program
  • Develops, leads, manages and evaluates the activities, programs and services of the Student Outreach and Recruitment unit
  • Develops and implements appropriate strategy, methods and procedures to provide effective, inclusive and successful outreach, recruitment and admission for prospective students, families, community colleges, high schools, K-12 districts, foundation partners, community affinity groups and the educational community within and outside of California including targeted US states and international upper division transfers
  • Represents and markets the university, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Undergraduate Admissions, SOAR, Educational Opportunity Program, Financial Aid & Scholarship Office, Intercollegiate Athletics, Pre-College Programs, Parent & Family Programs, and University Housing Services to the community
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates a staff of recruiters to effectively advise prospective students and their families about the CSU and SJSU including developing strong presentation skills, effective interpersonal skills and knowledge of SJSU admission processes, academic breadth and campus resources
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates the Welcome Center coordinator
  • Designs, collects, analyzes and assesses program effectiveness including satisfaction and student learning as appropriate
  • Maintains and updates databases and generates regular reports on unit activities

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and carry out policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to CSU Admissions standards, SJSU history and general information about the city of San José and Bay Area
  • Thorough knowledge and implementation of recruitment programming and techniques
  • Thorough knowledge of advising/counseling techniques for university admission
  • Knowledge and skills in working with students from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Privacy laws such as FERPA
  • Working knowledge of Enrollment Management policies and procedures, including student information systems. 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain successful strategic collaborations across departments and divisions within a University
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan and evaluate work and projects
  • Knowledge developing and managing a budget
  • Ability to understand and manage the recruitment and admissions application processing cycles that affect workflow of the department and other Enrollment Management units
  • Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Five (5) to Seven (7) years of professional level experience within higher education working with student service functions; outreach and recruitment of students to higher education institutions, admissions, program development or academic support programs
  • Five (5) to Seven (7) years of progressive leadership or supervisory experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience delivering presentations
  • Experience working with historically underrepresented student populations and with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Experience with data collection and assessment reporting

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Business, Student Affairs, Higher Education, College Counseling/Advising, College Student Personnel or related field or equivalent training, education, or experience
  • Six (6) to Eight (8) years of professional level experience within higher education working with student service functions; admissions, outreach and recruitment,
  • program development or academic support programs
  • Six (6) to Eight (8) years of progressive leadership or supervisory experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience developing and implementing a student recruitment plan
  • Experience developing/forecasting a budget
  • Experience with overseeing a welcome center function
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience developing college outreach and recruitment presentations for staff to deliver to students, family members and counselors

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $10,500/month - $11,010/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,891/month - $22,119/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
