The Vice Provost for Academic Innovation reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and leads efforts across Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) and Global Engagement and Partnerships as well as a number of Specialized Programs and Services, including our Testing Office and Passport Office. The Vice Provost is charged with advancing SJSU’s entrepreneurial efforts to expand access through PaCE Programs (at both the graduate and undergraduate levels), build deeper global partnerships to drive enrollment and the flows of students to and from the San José Region, and advancing specialized programs that meet current campus and community needs.

The Vice Provost must build on the strong framework already available to further increase access to programs through SJSU Online and other core platforms. Moreover, the Vice Provost oversees an organization where pilot projects and ideas are cultivated and advanced. This includes advancing a robust program of continuing education units led by SJSU faculty and staff. The position works closely with other offices in Academic Affairs to manage the PaCE budget, coordinate with colleges to deliver effective programs, and develop new programs that meet local and global demands. The position directly supervises managers and has responsibility for staff across the Academic Innovation unit. The Vice Provost is a highly collaborative leader who can bring intra- and inter-divisional teams together to meet the needs of all our students enrolled in PaCE programs. The Office of Academic Innovation also serves as a central hub for the colleges, providing comprehensive customer service that emphasizes problem-solving, responsiveness, and convenience.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads the development of innovative degree and non-degree educational programs across all PaCE verticals, including SJSU Online
  • Advance strategies to deepen corporate and non-profit relationships to meet workforce needs in Silicon Valley and beyond
  • Lead program development in non-credit continuing education efforts across campus that empower faculty and staff to deliver high quality microcredentials to industry partners in the Silicon Valley and beyond
  • Serve as a central hub for the colleges, providing comprehensive customer service that emphasizes problem-solving, responsiveness, and convenience
  • Promotes and develops strategic partnerships with the faculty and colleges at SJSU, with other domestic and international universities, and with industry and the community
  • Works with these groups to identify and meet their educational needs
  • Maintains excellent relationships with strategic partners
  • Facilitates the development of certificate and degree programs, online education, international programs, professional development, and conferences (virtual and place-based)
  • Guides the shaping and oversees the implementation of all PaCE programs to promote the reputation and success of SJSU
  • Serves as a liaison between SJSU and local, national, and international colleagues and organizations
  • Develops self-support educational opportunities for faculty and academic units
  • Supports self-support activities that arise within the colleges
  • Oversees and coordinates seamless operation of programs like Intersession, Open University, Special Session, and Partnerships
  • Partner with SJSU's Academic Colleges and Community College partners in the region to expand 2+2 and other pipeline programs through PaCE
  • Recommends initiatives and changes to improve quality and services for the division, including improvements in marketing, fiscal, and information technology services
  • Collaborates with other units to improve established processes and practices related to fiscal management of self-support funds, including timely allocations to colleges
  • Initiates action to resolve problems
  • Manages relations with stakeholders and solicits feedback for improved Academic Innovation services
  • Ensures organizational compliance with all SJSU and CSU guidelines and with federal immigration regulations
  • Develops and implements a transparent budget process for Academic Innovation in collaboration with Academic Business and Strategic Operations (ABSO) in the Office of the Provost and works with the Provost to assure the viability of the annual budget and Academic Innovation plans
  • In collaboration with the ABSO, prepares regular progress reports for the Provost and President, as required
  • Works to internationalize SJSU by deepening educational partnerships between SJSU and other organizations across the globe
  • Provide leadership on campus conversations to expand academic program development in collaboration with international partners
  • Leads conversations on campus to help organize programs to facilitate international exchange
  • Develops programs for international students to expand SJSU’s international reputation as a leader in higher education
  • In partnership with partners in Student Affairs at SJSU, support all international activities (e.g., agreements with other campuses, faculty exchange agreements, visitors from abroad) that arise within the campus or come to the campus from outside
  • Prepares and administers guidelines for international exchanges between SJSU and other universities and colleges
  • Works with Global Studies and other academic entities to develop a complete international vision for SJSU (including student services, study abroad programs, and academic programs with an international orientation)
  • Oversee staff who provide services in current and new specialized programs
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the establishment and ongoing operations of the campus Passport Office
  • Advance strategy to scale Testing Office programming and delivery of testing that meets the workforce demands of the region

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent
  • Five years of administrative leadership
  • Prior experience developing and delivering professional and continuing education programs

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate Degree
  • Six to ten years of administrative experience directly overseeing credit and non-credit programs that work at scale to advance access to the university

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator IV
Anticipated Hiring Range: $19,584/month - $21,667/month
CSU Salary Range: $10,106/month - $32,441/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
