Job Summary: Under direct supervision, the IT Student Assistant provides IT service and support to those visiting and/or needing assistance from the IT Help Desk, including staff, students, potential students, parents, faculty, vendors, and campus visitors. The IT Student Assistant will rely on excellent client service, problem-solving and communication skills to provide IT help desk support to resolve most day-to-day issues. Success in this role requires a well-rounded individual with a genuine enthusiasm for technology and a true interest in helping people achieve more through the careful adoption and support of information technologies.

About the California State University Maritime Academy:

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering,  Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the daily operation of the IT Help Desk.
    • Provide excellent in-person assistance to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assisting with access to and use of network and applications.
    • Serving as general IT information and resource person for campus community.
    • Providing point-of-contact customer service and support in a timely, courteous and effective manner.
    • Following established procedures using approved tools, scripts, and documentation.
    • Ensuring customer satisfaction issues are escalated promptly and properly.
  • Assisting with inventory, e-waste and asset management.
  • Assisting with software installation and computer imaging.
  • Track and resolve incidents using ticketing system.
  • Create work orders and collect necessary/appropriate details for issues to be escalated.
    • Coordinate with other IT staff for non-basic services.
    • Follow-up on assigned incidents until they are fully resolved.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff to tackle complex issues.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the IT Help Desk area, reporting when basic supplies need to be refilled.
  • Assess and deploy paper to shared printers, reporting systemic printer issues.
  • Clean student computer labs and reading room equipment seasonally.
  • Basic Audio-Visual operation and support.
  • Use communication channels to inform IT teams of important issues and/or information which may be helpful in improving service. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Excellent customer service.
  • Professional interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of the campus and campus services.
  • Ability to work well as a team member and communicate effectively with the team.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, knowledge of PC and Mac systems.
  • Familiarity with basic hardware, software and networking concepts.
  • Interest in and willingness to learn various aspects of computers, networking, and A/V.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, detail-oriented, resourceful, and self-motivated.
  • Must be people-oriented and able to interact with diverse populations of students, staff, faculty, and the broader community.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Ability to process and maintain sensitive information with professional tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner.
  • Available to work after hours and weekends (preferred)
  • Previous A/V experience (preferred)
  • Ability to operate golf cart (preferred) *Valid drivers license and DMV Records Check will be required prior to operating golf cart.

Supplemental Information

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check and DMV records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Eligibility to Work:  Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the United States within three days of the date of hire.

Integration: The California State University Board of Trustees has approved the integration of the California State University Maritime Academy with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, effective July 1, 2025. The two campuses will form one academic institution operated as California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and all employment positions with California State University Maritime Academy are subject to this transition. Employees hired in the period after the Trustees’ approval on November 21, 2024 and prior to the integration date on July 1, 2025 will have their employment transitioned to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.  Employment shall continue to be subject to California State University policies and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Any changes in organizational structure, reporting relationships, or employment conditions will be communicated as details are finalized.
