PURPOSE:
Under the administrative direction of the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and day-to-day work direction of the Media Production Specialist III (MPS_III), the Film and Digital Media Technician supports the department’s technical services and manages Digital Media (DM) equipment and facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: from PD
- In consultation with the chair and the Media Production Specialist Ill, coordinates the daily operations and provides support for the Cinematic Arts and Technology Department's technical functions and services, including assisting and coordinating faculty and students' use of media production and post-production technology, and coordinating student and faculty use of the department's studios and media labs. Provides audio-visual technology support and assistance for events, and a variety of production and post-production activities, including but not limited to obtaining equipment, testing and setting up equipment, maintaining files on audio-visual materials, managing digital media files, and utilizing specialized software. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, other staff members, and students.
- Provides assistance and troubleshooting of technical hardware and software issues to students during scheduled lab hours. Provides technical support to students working on production and post-production projects. Provides backup for Cinematic Arts staff.
- Schedules, manages, and maintains all studio and lab spaces, facilities, and related equipment. Tests, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs equipment. Contacts and schedules technicians when necessary.
- In collaboration with the MPS-III and other department staff, trains and supervises student assistants, determines the methods and procedures by which student work is to be accomplished, and assists with the completion of new student assistant hiring and performance evaluations.
- Implements and executes procedures and policies related to department space and equipment. Provides training and oversight of safety measures and ensures compliance with codes and regulations.
- Analyzes and develops proposals for future technical equipment, space, and budget needs.
Other Functions:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the full range of production techniques and equipment for a full range of production techniques, including cinematography, lighting, editing, color grading, sound recording and mixing, and graphics. General knowledge of production principles and practices for instructional media. Working knowledge of tools for authoring interactive multimedia products delivered via a variety of synchronous and asynchronous techniques.
Strong writing skills and editing skills including the ability to learn narration and continuity script writing with a strong foundation in English grammar. Strong research skills and broad knowledge of resources and techniques which communicate information through multimedia productions. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain working relationships with staff and students.
Ability to understand operating procedures and underlying technology in order to use and trouble-shoot equipment and systems. Strong organizational skills to independently mange and coordinate all facets of productions, budgets, and other projects. Solid to advanced photographic processing and manipulation skills. Ability to provide lead work and project direction to other staff. Ability to work with and train students involved in production projects.
Ability to develop, create, stage and/or produce professional quality visuals and evaluate production effectiveness in meeting objectives. . Ability to learn techniques in the development of television, film, radio, and audio productions. Ability to use and maintain the studio space, as well as camera, lighting, and other production equipment.
Working knowledge of safety requirements including how to handle hazardous chemicals and materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Entry to the first level within this classification requires a basic knowledge of and skill in graphics, still or motion picture photography, or television production. This knowledge and skill are normally obtained through a bachelor's degree in a related field and at least six months of experience in still and motion picture photography, including a thorough knowledge of video production techniques.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS:
Experience with post-production or audio/visual production, or equivalent. Excellent organizational, record-keeping, and time management skills sufficient to prioritize work and function independently under the pressure of competing deadlines and frequent interruptions. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a variety of pre-production,
production and post-production systems, software, and media equipment. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with persons at all levels in the organization, in both individual and committee settings. Working knowledge of basic electronics, troubleshooting techniques, and simple repair methods for video and audio systems.
Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position, including the knowledge and abilities identified above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficiency in Adobe Suite software, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. Experience with an ETC Ion XE DMX lighting console, ETC Eos Family software, or equivalent; basic understanding of color science and industry standards (SMPTE, ITU, DCI).
Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent <student/finance> information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
