Job Overview

Under general direction, the Business & Data Utilization Analyst (BDUA) undertakes broad and complex studies with little or no supervision. This position provides expertise and leadership for analytical studies projects that include collecting and analyzing data and developing processes to support Academic Affairs leadership’s planning, management and decision making. The BDUA is detail oriented and intellectually curious, with strong analytical skills and the ability to tactfully present solutions enabling the resolution and prevention of problems within Academic Affairs. This position contributes to the success of the University by conducting objective analysis to identify the key drivers influencing student success, business operations, the interrelated policies/procedures, and operational performance.

The BDUA will be knowledgeable of organizational projects and processes and will be able to identify potential practices that may be negatively impacting the University and those that will benefit from creative support. The BDUA provides recommendations and training to administrative leadership within the organization. The position works closely with constituents of Academic Affairs and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions; support and develop a full cycle of assigned analytics/reporting projects; determine functional report requirements, develop the technical specifications, and design, develop, test, and maintain reports and dashboards. The BDUA is responsible for recommending topics for study and analysis, for determining and outlining the general project plans, and for recognizing when problems encountered are significant enough to call to the attention of the Vice Provost.

The position will also participate in the planning, coordination, and implementation of campus-wide data and analytics products as needed. The application environment includes the campus student information system, Oracle data warehouse, open source, as well as custom or purchased software systems to support the needs of the University. This position acts as a liaison with a variety of other administrative and support offices on campus by coordination, researching, processing, recommending, analyzing/evaluating, and reviewing various processes, documents and reports.

In addition, the incumbent will work closely with functional area leads, Institutional Planning and Analysis, and Instructional and Information Technology Services to provide data analysis and reporting to enable data driven decision making and consult on the development of campus-wide data strategy, helping to set goals and priorities based on campus need.

Business and Data Utilization Analyst (Associate, Academic and Institutional Studies III)

This is a full-time, exempt position, which will lead toward permanent status following the successful completion of a probationary period.

Pay, Benefits, and Work Schedule

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $7,950 to $9,000 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $7,950 - $14,381 per month

This position is offered under the CSU classification and salary structure in effect at the time of posting. Please note that the CSU compensation system for this classification will transition to a step-based structure following implementation effective October 1, 2025. Employees in this classification will move to the step system and (new classification) after hire, in accordance with CSU guidelines.

Salary is commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected.

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 15 paid holidays are offered each year; 14 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.
