Facilities Maintenance Mechanic

Job Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, assigned to the Energy and Utilities unit, works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Utilities Operations Supervisor. The incumbent works as a skilled generalist utilizing journey level skills in the mechanical or plumbing trades along with strong skills in other trade areas to perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on utility infrastructure systems. Typically, skills are utilized to maintain and repair mechanical facilities equipment and systems associated with high and low pressure steam heating, chilled water loop, storm drainage networks and sanitary sewer utility networks, domestic and recycled water distribution including irrigation and fire hydrants, and low voltage fire alarm and security networks to ensure a clean, safe and attractive campus/learning environment. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to ensure the preventive maintenance.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs at a journey level in at least one trade and assists with basic and advanced level maintenance and repair work for various trades including pipefitting, electrical, plumbing, and maintenance utility field work
  • Performs various types of preventive maintenance and routine maintenance work
  • Analyze and troubleshoot problems across multiple trade functions and perform necessary repairs independently
  • Prepare standard reports
  • Estimates cost, time and materials of maintenance and repair work
  • Uses computer for communicating, researching parts and specifications, coordinating, documenting work details, and recording time log
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with manufacturer’s recommendations, standard trade practices, and applicable codes and regulations
  • Operates utility cart, pick-up truck, welding equipment, scissor lift, forklift, and other equipment, as certified, to access, repair, and transport personnel, equipment and materials

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in skilled trades
  • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks and operate all necessary tools and equipment
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group
  • Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform assigned work
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
  • Ability to recognize and accommodate changing priorities
  • Ability to implement a customer service approach

 

Required Qualifications

  • Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

 

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School diploma
  • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Journey level standing in the mechanical or plumbing trades
  • Knowledge of mechanical and plumbing systems including an understanding of building and/or automated control systems
  • Five years of journey level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction of mechanical or plumbing systems including utility network distribution systems

 

Compensation

Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,462/month - $6,658/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
