Financial Analyst (Hammer Theatre)

Job Summary

The Hammer Theatre Center, operated in collaboration between San José State University (SJSU) and the City of San José, is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Financial Analyst. This key role provides financial oversight and support to ensure the fiscal health of the Hammer Theatre. Under the general direction of the Executive Managing Director, the Financial Analyst is responsible for recording, reporting, analyzing, and posting a wide variety of revenue and expense transactions. The successful candidate will play a central role in developing and maintaining financial procedures, controls, and reporting processes, while also acting as the primary liaison between SJSU Finance and Business Services and the College of Humanities and the Arts. In addition to financial responsibilities, the role includes administrative duties that support the front office and ensure a high standard of customer service.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct data-driven analyses to inform financial forecasts and strategic budget planning
  • Implement and monitor operating budgets, including processing budget transfers and journal entries and maintaining budget ledgers
  • Contribute to the preparation of various budgetary reports, including business plans and external stakeholder reports
  • Manage assigned class budgets, ensuring accurate monthly reporting, budget maintenance, and financial oversight
  • Analyze budget and financial reports, identifying discrepancies and taking corrective actions
  • Generate client invoices, create and submit journal entries for invoices, process client payments against invoices
  • Track estimates versus actuals for event revenues and expenditures
  • Assist Executive Managing Director in artist negotiations and engagement
  • Initiate artist registration as an SJSU supplier
  • Review and submit Hammer Presents contracts to SJSU Strategic Sourcing

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of budgetary procedures (including activity-based costing), accepted accounting principles, and financial management practices
  • Advanced financial analysis skills sufficient to develop budget scenarios that include a variety of inputs
  • Ability to create or design new ways to display financial information or concepts in graphical formats for leadership
  • Ability to train and communicate fiscal information to staff members
  • Ability to identify weaknesses in business processes and take corrective action
  • Ability to identify and enact process improvement and embrace change
  • Advanced spreadsheet and database capabilities; intermediate word processing and presentation capabilities
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently, and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist
  • Ability to respond to problems quickly, exercising sound judgment, making constructive recommendations, interpreting and applying fiscal policies and procedures, and performing work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training
  • Two (2) years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business administration or a related field, with a concentration in Accounting or Finance
  • Three years of relevant work experience performing similar functions
  • Experience with CSU financial, budget, accounting, and purchasing policies and procedures
  • Experience with CSU accounting and financial reporting systems, including CFS, PeopleSoft, and Data Warehouse

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist – Exempt I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,615/month - $6,990/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,598/month - $8,318/month

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
