Hammer Theatre Financial Analyst (SJSU Only)

Job Summary

The Hammer Theatre is seeking a collaborative and analytical Financial Analyst to support the financial operations of one of the university's premier performing arts venues. Reporting to the Executive Managing Director, this position is responsible for budget planning, financial reporting, fund management, event fiscal administration, and financial process improvement. The Financial Analyst serves as the primary liaison between the Hammer Theatre, Finance & Business Services, and the College of Humanities and the Arts, ensuring sound fiscal stewardship and operational excellence.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, monitor, and analyze operating budgets and financial forecasts
  • Prepare financial reports, business plans, and budget analyses that support strategic decision-making
  • Manage financial transactions, including budget transfers, journal entries, and reconciliations
  • Oversee financial administration for client events, including invoicing, payments, and revenue tracking
  • Coordinate financial processes for Hammer Presents programming, including artist contracts, purchasing, and payment processing
  • Ensure compliance with CSU and university financial policies and procedures while identifying opportunities for process improvement
  • Build collaborative relationships with campus partners and provide exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of budgetary procedures (including activity-based costing), accepted accounting principles, and financial management practices
  • Advanced financial analysis skills sufficient to develop budget scenarios that include a variety of inputs
  • Ability to create or design new ways to display financial information or concepts in graphical formats for leadership
  • Ability to train and communicate fiscal information to staff members
  • Ability to identify weaknesses in business processes and take corrective action
  • Ability to identify and enact process improvement and embrace change
  • Advanced spreadsheet and database capabilities; intermediate word processing and presentation capabilities
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently, and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with a team
  • Ability to exercise initiative, flexibility, and substantial judgment and discretion

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business administration or a related field, with a concentration in Accounting or Finance.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience performing similar functions
  • Experience with CSU financial, budget, accounting, and purchasing policies and procedures
  • Experience with CSU accounting and financial reporting systems, including CFS, PeopleSoft, and Data Warehouse

 

Compensation

Classification:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,438/month - $6,698/month (Step 12 – Step 14)
CSU Salary Range: $5,178/month - $7,543/month (Step 1 – Step 20)

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
