Job Summary

The Business Analyst is responsible for the requirements gathering, evaluation, analysis, and recommendation for solutions to meet user and departmental technology needs. The core functions include conducting needs assessments, identifying requirements, conducting gap analyses, working with developers and vendors, and managing projects to implement technology solutions.

The Business Analyst will be proactive in their approach to document and recommend improvements in business processes to ensure users/departments have the most up-to-date technological solutions to perform their jobs and serve the university community effectively.

This position provides business analysis, project management, custom solution development, support, and overall Information Technology expertise.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with departments and assemble teams of experts to gather and document requirements.
  • Document current and proposed future state business processes, workflows and use cases.
  • Develop gap analysis and prioritized requirements
  • Develop test plans aligned with requirements and future state; and coordinate teams to ensure that processes are tested and validated.
  • Ensure quality solutions are delivered that meet requirements and enhance business capabilities.
  • Develop relationships with businesses, collaborating to optimize and enhance their use of applications and solutions.
  • Lead cross-functional business process re-engineering teams to best utilize applications capabilities.
  • Develop project documentation as needed, including Project Scope, Requirements, Design, Test plans, and Support plans.
  • Create detailed project and implementation plans in collaboration with departmental personnel.
  • Working with other IT groups and business teams manage execution of project plans during all phases – analysis, design, development, and implementation.
  • Design, build and configure new custom solutions that meet defined business requirements.
  • Enhance existing solutions as needs are identified and prioritized.
  • Test and deploy new and enhanced solutions.
  • Define and document operational and maintenance procedures required for developed solutions.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough and advanced knowledge of business systems analysis concepts, principles, practices, and methodologies.
  • Ability to learn, analyze, define, enhance, document, and recommend improvements to business processes and workflows.
  • Advanced business analysis skills, including requirements gathering, needs assessment, gap analysis, process mapping, and development of current- and future-state processes.
  • Advanced analytical and research skills to evaluate systems, applications, emerging technologies, and alternative solutions to meet business and departmental needs.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to develop and manage project plans, establish priorities and deadlines, coordinate resources, monitor progress, and successfully deliver multiple complex projects within scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Working knowledge of waterfall and agile project management methodologies and practices.
  • Advanced communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users, technical staff, vendors, and stakeholders in a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document requirements, processes, recommendations, project status, and technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to coordinate, prioritize, and manage multiple projects, tasks, and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively with vendors, participate in user groups, and support vendor evaluation and management activities.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize new application software, systems, tools, and technologies.
  • Strong logical and analytical reasoning skills to diagnose and resolve computer-related and systems issues.
  • Ability to apply security policies, models, frameworks, and practices to ensure appropriate protection of systems and information.
  • Strong knowledge of IT service management processes, including ITIL support operations and Incident, Change, Problem, and Release Management.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Four (4) years of relevant experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science or related field
  • Ten years’ experience working on IT projects as business analyst and/or project manager
  • Five years of experience supporting information systems and technology
  • Five years’ experience developing new or enhancing applications Experience with workflow applications

 

Compensation

Classification: Business Systems Analyst III

CSU Salary Range: $7,284/month - $10,611/month (Step 1 – Step 20)

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
