Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director for Finance Support and Innovation, the Assistant Director for Finance Support leads a team of business analysts responsible for supporting Finance applications, tools and projects which enable the Financial and Business Services and University Budget and Financial Strategy teams to operate effectively. The Finance Support team routinely resolves challenging and complex technical issues and works closely with SJSU’s Information Technology Services team, the CSU Common Management Systems team, and operational units to design and deliver technology-based business solutions. to support a seamless customer experience.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Unit Oversight and Priority Setting: Manage the Finance Support Unit’s day-to-day activities, including setting priorities, problem-solving, and maintaining open communication with staff. Establish and maintain metrics for tracking departmental performance and effect improvements where indicated.
  • Talent Management and Development: Provide effective leadership, supervision, and development opportunities to staff. Recruit and develop the team in a manner that supports inclusiveness and diversity and effectively manage employee performance.
  • Knowledge and Collaboration: Maintain the required knowledge base and develop staff expertise regarding changing and new technology. Foster teamwork within and across departments and establish rapport with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Coordinate complex Finance Month End and Year End processes for the University and its five auxiliaries, including overseeing formal submissions to the Chancellor’s Office and the State. Oversee the efficient management of the Labor Cost Distribution (LCD) process and maintain accurate, up-to-date campus records for the Delegation of Fiscal Authority (DOA) to ensure institutional compliance and accountability.
  • Campus Partner Support and Policy Navigation: Through Finance Connect, serve as a primary resource for customer service support to campus partners, providing expert guidance in navigating Financial Services and Budget Management and Strategic Business Services policies, processes, and applications.
  • Lead the product evaluation and implementation processes for all technologies that support financial and business services at SJSU (e.g., student financials, Item types, supplier onboarding, purchasing, contracts, payments, asset management, budgeting, reconciliation, etc.)
  • Work as an equal partner with Information Technology and CSU Common Management Systems (CMS) teams to ensure continuous operation of SJSU business systems and related interfaces
  • Coordinate CMS-assigned tasks, such as user acceptance testing, with appropriate campus staff
  • Design enhancements to SJSU technology solutions to support efficient business processes (e.g., FTS, OnBase)
  • Provide subject matter expertise to IT professionals, including external consultants and third-party providers, in primary business functions delivered by Finance and Business Services, and Budget Management & Financial Strategy.
  • Coordinate financial application testing and implementation for all CSU-led technology enhancements (e.g., Common Finance System, Data Warehouse, FTS, CSUBUY, Concur).
  • Independently research and recommend new technologies that promote seamless business processes and enhance the user experience

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Subject matter expertise in enterprise financial system standard functions sufficient to perform gap analyses, develop conceptual solutions to solve business process issues and communicate business needs to IT professionals
  • Knowledge of common business processes (e.g., purchase to pay, travel reimbursement, etc.)
  • Knowledge of enterprise financial system architecture sufficient to guide the implementation of third-party interfaces and troubleshoot operational errors
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge using change management principles, methodologies and tools
  • Exceptional communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work autonomously and exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., MS Office Suite, GSuite)
  • Ability to hire, train, and motivate technical/analytical staff
  • Working knowledge of, or the ability to develop proficiency in, the appropriate and ethical use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), in higher education and administrative contexts
  • Ability to apply emerging technologies to support operational effectiveness, data-informed decision-making, and service delivery to students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to support continuous improvement and organizational learning through the responsible application of technology within assigned areas of responsibility
  • Ability to evaluate potential applications, promote responsible, ethical, and equitable use, and ensure alignment with institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and strategic priorities
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Seven years of progressively responsible professional experience, with at least five years at an analyst level or above
  • Professional experience in policy administration, business process mapping, and project coordination

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business administration, public administration, management information science, or related field
  • Courses or certification(s) in change management, business process redesign, or project management
  • Experience with CSU Common Finance System (CFS), Concur and CSUBUY applications
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience with CSU policies and California laws pertaining to business functions and public records requests
  • Experience with PeopleSoft/Oracle financial system

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $10,629/month - $10,834/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,053/month - $16,221/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
