Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Job Summary

Health Services is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to provide laboratory services supporting student healthcare operations. The incumbent performs specimen collection, testing, processing, reporting, and record maintenance in accordance with California licensure requirements, laboratory procedures, and applicable regulations. Reporting to the Laboratory and Ancillary Services Manager, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist also supports ancillary service operations and collaborates with healthcare providers, staff, and students to promote quality, patient-centered care.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical laboratory testing, specimen collection, processing, analysis, reporting, and record maintenance
  • Conduct skin punctures and venipuncture when required, while following aseptic technique and established safety procedures
  • Perform quality control activities, instrument calibration and maintenance, corrective actions, and compliance documentation
  • Process and label specimens for in-house testing and outside laboratory services while maintaining accurate patient records
  • Support laboratory operations, accreditation and licensure requirements, inventory management, staff training, quality improvement activities, and patient service

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effective communication across a variety of venues and the ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • General awareness of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), and a willingness to develop skills in their appropriate, responsible, and ethical use in a higher education environment, consistent with institutional policies and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical laboratory work and the use and care of laboratory equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of methods and procedures involved in phlebotomy, including aseptic technique
  • Knowledge of the preparation, mounting, and staining of specimens, laboratory tests, and clinical laboratory quality control procedures and standards
  • Working knowledge of software applications used at the Student Wellness Center or the ability to quickly navigate new electronic health record and laboratory information management systems
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety fundamentals and OSHA Laboratory Standards
  • Ability to identify incongruities in test procedure and inconsistencies in reports of test results for patients
  • Ability to perform a variety of laboratory analyses and to evaluate information against measurable criteria
  • Ability to keep records and prepare various administrative and laboratory analysis reports
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, organize work priorities and special projects, with the willingness to adjust and be flexible as required

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent postsecondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of experience as a CLS in an ambulatory health setting
  • At least one (1) year of experience with direct patient interaction and providing courteous and professional patient service
  • Experience with inventory management, including monitoring supply levels and placing orders in a timely manner
  • Experience performing venipuncture/phlebotomy

 

Compensation

Classification: Clinical Laboratory Scientist I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,321/month - $7,617/month (Step 15 – Step 17)
CSU Salary Range: $5,549/month - $8,083/month (Step 1 – Step 20)

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
